How to reach the Conference

Karlsruhe can be reached easily by car, train or plane. Detailed information can be found below.

Travelling by Car

Karlsruhe is well connected to the German motorways. If you decide to come to Karlsruhe by car you can use the Map24 formular on the right to calculate your route.

If arriving by car via the Autobahn A5 (Motorway) leave at the exit Durlach and continue in the direction Stadtmitte (city center). Follow this road until you see a big cross-road (Durlacher Tor) just behind a big red church to your right. From there on the university is indicated by road signs. Please note that there is restricted access by car to the university campus before 4pm. A big public parking area is located north-east of the campus (cf. campus map).

Travelling by Train

Karlsruhe is also well connected via highspeed trains to most of Germany, Switzerland and France. For further information please use the Deutsche Bahn website. If you plan to come to Karlsruhe by train please have a look at the Happy Rail Ticket. Public transportion in Karlsruhe is excellent so no rental car will be needed once you arrive.

At Karlsruhe main station

In front of the station you will find a tram stop.There you can choose one of the following tramways:

  • 2 direction: Wolfahrtsweier
  • 3 direction: Heide
  • 4 direction: Waldstadt
  • S4 direction: Bretten/Eppingen/Heilbron

Leave the tram at the tram stop Kronenplatz / KIT Campus Süd and follow the signs to the conference secretariat.

Finding your way on the campus

From the tram stop Kronenplatz / KIT Campus Süd it is only a 5 minutes walk over the campus to get to the conference site. To find your way have a look at the menu point meeting site or use the Campus map. The tram stop is in the lower border slightly left of the middle. Conference secretariat, registration desk, and lecture hall are located in building 30.22, straight to the north.

Travelling by Plane

There are 5 airports around Karlsruhe (see map):

Baden-Airport and Frankfurt-Hahn are served by cheap airlines, like Ryanair. From the large airports (Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Strasbourg) there are good connections by train (see below) and airport shuttle. Trains and shuttles usually arrive at Karlsruhe main station. Please see above how to get to KIT from there.

Public transportion in and around Karlsruhe is is very good. No rental car is needed.

Arrival at Frankfurt Airport

Railway: There are hourly train connections directly from Frankfurt airport to Karlsruhe (follow the signs to long distance trains when you leave the airport, the price for a second class one-way ticket is 34 EUR). To find a train connection, use the train schedule of the German railway and enter Frankfurt Main Flughafen (airport) as your city of departure. Arrival at Stuttgart Airport

Railway: There is a shuttle bus from the airport to the main station in downtown Stuttgart. To find a train connection, use the train schedule of the German railway and enter Stuttgart Flughafen (airport) or Stuttgart Hbf (city center) as your city of departure. Arrival at Strasbourg Airport

Railway: Take the airport shuttle bus (leaving every 20-30 minutes) to the tramstop Baggersee. Tickets for the shuttle bus can be bought on the spot, from the bus driver, or at any other tram vending machine. Price for a one way ticket is 5.10 € and a return ticket will cost you 9.50 €. At tramstop Baggersee take Tram A to Strasbourg main station (Gare Centrale). Railway tickets from Strasbourg main station to Karlsruhe can be booked online.

Arrival at Baden Airport

Airport-Shuttle: Take the airport shuttle bus (Baden-Airport-Express) (leaving 8 times a day on weekdays, 3 times a day on saturdays, synchronized with flight schedule) to Karlsruhe Main Station. One-way-tickets can be bought from the driver (9 €, cash only)

Railway: There are Taxi stands in front of the terminal. The driving time from Baden-Airpark to the mainstation Baden-Baden is about 15 min. The price is approx. 26€.

Alternatively you can take bus route 205 to Baden-Baden main train station or bus route 234 to Rastatt. Railway tickets from Baden-Baden or Rastatt to Karlsruhe can be booked online (enter Baden-Baden Bahnhof or Rastatt as city of departure) or purchased at the train station. Depending on the train tickets are about 14 €, the trip to Karlsruhe main station takes about 20min for both Baden-Baden and Rastatt.

Arrival at Frankfurt Hahn Airport

Bus to Heidelberg & Railway: Take the airport shuttle bus (Hahn-Express) to the Heidelberg main station. Tickets can be bought at the driver (18 € for a one-way ticket, cash only). The coaches are running regulary 7 times a day without any need for reservation, the trip to Heidelberg takes about 2h20m. The bus stop for Hahn-Express in Heidelberg is just in front of the main train station. Railway tickets from Heidelberg to Karlsruhe can be booked online (enter Heidelberg as city of departure) or purchased at the train station. Depending on the train tickets are between 9 € and 18 €, the trip to Karlsruhe main station takes about 45min.
